BARCODE PLANTAGE wins :output award 2008 Grand Prix!



The :output 10 jury consisting of Gerard Unger, Michael Worthington, Franco Clivio, Huib van Zeijl and Florian Pfeffer has made its final decision. Out of more than 1.250 submitted works from 39 countries the jury selected 83 works to be published in the yearbook :output 11.		This year the :output Grand Prix has been awarded for the first time. BARCODE PLANTAGE transforms a simple product bar code
into a unique tree in the garden of globalisation


One can find it on almost all products: the bar code. Everyone knows that the bar code is used to facilitate the cashing and recording of goods in stores. But which information is actually encoded within the bar code? A simple answer to this question can be found at one of the product databases on the Internet, which are basically huge networks of national code databases.		Keying in the 8, 12 or 13 digit figures of a bar code into an international code database, returns information on the manufacturer and the country of origin of the product. Moreover, each bar code is assigned to only one product worldwide; but these individual details are hardly visible to the naked eye.

Operating mode


Once a bar code is keyed or scanned in, the program sends a request to the database, which returns a master file data. This master file data is then analysed to define positions, curves and colours of Bezier curves of the tree structure. The number of these curves will vary correspondence to the number of figures in the code. Simultaneously, the user will hear a melody, which is based on the figures of the bar code.		To complete the visualised information details of the country of origin, manufacturer, product number and sum - each on a single black bar connected by fine lines – are displayed. Since all data is being interpreted by an algorithm that works completely without any random aspect each product is represented by a characteristic and singular tree.

Mit BARCODE PLANTAGE erwächst aus einem Produktstrichcode

Er ist auf nahezu allen Konsumprodukten zu finden: der Barcode. Jeder weiß, dass er dazu dient, das Abkassieren und Registrieren von Waren in Geschäften zu erleichtern. Doch welche Informationen sind eigentlich in ihm verschlüsselt?

Gibt man die 8,12 oder 13 Stellen eines Strichcodes in eine Produktdatenbankabfrage im Internet ein - wobei diese meistens ein Netzwerk der nationalen Codedatenbanken ist - so erfährt man den Hersteller und das Herkunftsland. Darüber hinaus ist jeder Strichcode weltweit nur einem einzigen Produkt zugeteilt; jedoch ist ihm diese Individualität kaum anzumerken.

BARCODE PLANTAGE führt den grafischen Strichcode inklusive der Ziffern und seine in der Datenbank hinterlegten Informationen zusammen, um in die Metaebene seiner Einzigartigkeit vorzudringen, so dass diese sich durch eine grafische und akustische Interpretation vollendet vor dem Betrachter entfalten kann.

Die Funktionsweise


Gibt man einen Strichcode in die BARCODE PLANTAGE ein, so schickt das Programm eine Anfrage an die voreingestellte Datenbank und erhält als Antwort die Stammdaten des Produktes zurück. Diese werden anschließend einer Textanalyse unterzogen, um Positionen, Krümmungen und Farben von Bezierkurven festzulegen, welche sich dann vor den Augen des Betrachters auf dem Bildschirm entwickeln. Analog zur Länge des Zifferncodes variiert die Anzahl der gezeichneten Bezierkurven. Gleichzeitig erkling beruhend auf der Zahlenabfolge des Strichcodes eine Tonabfolge.		Als Vollendung werden die Datenbankinformationen mit den dazugehörigen Ziffernblöcken für Herkunftsland, Hersteller, Produktnummer und Checksumme durch dünne Linien verbunden. Da alle Daten mittels eines Algorithmus, der vollkommen zufallsfrei arbeitet, interpretiert werden, wächst für jedes Produkt ein für ihn charakteristischer Baum heran.
